RC5 48bit Encryption Challenge

UNB Cryptography LOGO

The
UNB Crytography Group helped in the international effort to crack the RC5 48bit encryption algorithm. Using a large number of computers working together in a distributed computing system, and using a brute force attack (trying all possible keys), the international team cracked the RC5 algorithm in RSA's second RC5 challenge.

RC5 48bit RESULTS

The 48bit RC5 encryption algorithm was cracked in 13 days using an international team of over 3,500 computers.

The international team was coordinated by Germano Caronni of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich who also wrote the codebreaking software.
