Effectiveness in Ontario
Vaccines in Canada are closely monitored with a surveillance network and safety information is published on a regular basis. The charts below show the latest safety data for the COVID-19 vaccines in Canada. So far there have been no safety issues identified with approved COVID-19 vaccines and no deaths reported from the vaccine in Canada with over 1 million doses given. More than 160 million doses have been given globally. This data is updated on a weekly basis. An adverse event is defined as any untoward medical occurrence which follows immunization and may not be causally related to usage of the vaccine. An adverse event is considered serious if it results in death, is life-threatening, requires in-patient hospitalization, results in persistent or significant disability, or results in a congenital anomaly/birth defect. The most frequently reported serious adverse event was anaphylaxis. The most frequently reported non-serious adverse events were pain at vaccination site, redness at site, swelling at site, warmth at site, and itching at site.
The following graph shows a comparison between the serious disease outcomes of people who get infected with COVID-19 (prolonged illness, hospitalization, ICU admission, ventilation, death) and the adverse event outcomes of people who get vaccinated (non-serious, serious, death). If you are trying to decide whether taking the COVID-19 is worth the risk vs getting infected naturally, the math is extremely clear. As you can see, the probability of having a serious disease outcome if you get infected with COVID-19 is hundreds or thousands of times higher than having a serious adverse event by taking the vaccine.
